While pizza, especially thick crust or pan pizza (that tends to have more bread dough) can wreak havoc to an Italian girl’s hips, I find the flatbread to be as satisfying and with fewer carbs to ingest, it could mean a few less pounds to cart around!
The classical sauce and cheese ” go to” selection is a big hit, but also equally as exciting is to get out of your comfort zone and live a little (as I often tell my family) it is fun to experiment with different toppings and combinations. Pictured above is a tangy and spicy marriage of arugula and hot sausage in a garlic and oil.
Below, I have listed an easy recipe and some of my favorite Pinterest finds on flatbread! Feel free to add your own!
- Lightly spoon flour into dry measuring cups; level with a knife
- Dissolve sugar and yeast in 6 tablespoons warm water in a large bowl; stir in 1/4 cup flour. Let stand 30 minutes or until bubbly. Add 1 3/4 cups flour, 1/2 cup warm water, and salt to yeast mixture; stir until a soft dough forms. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead until smooth and elastic (about 8 minutes); add enough of the remaining flour, 1 tablespoon at a time, to prevent dough from sticking to hands. Place dough in a large bowl coated with cooking spray, turning to coat top. Cover and let rise in a warm place (85°), free from drafts, 1 hour or until doubled in size. (Gently press two fingers into dough. If indentation remains, dough has risen enough.) Punch dough down; cover and let rest 5 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit when you are ready to make your flat bread pizza
Divide the dough into tennis ball sized balls. Roll each ball out so that it is 1/2 inch thick. Place the rolled out dough on a lightly floured baking sheet.
Lightly beat the egg yolk with 2 tbsp. of water. Brush this egg wash onto each piece of dough.
Prick several sets of holes in each piece of dough with a fork to keep the crust flat during the baking process.
Sprinkle the dough with salt and pepper and top with toppings of your choice.
Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes or until the crust is golden brown.
